The nailer revolution: meet the HiKOKI NR1890DCB Speed Series

HiKOKI's new Speed Series framing nailer is built to remove two of the biggest compromises in cordless first-fix work: weight and cycle speed. The NR1890DCB brings a 3.3 kg body-only weight, Air Spring Drive System+ and a genuinely useful interchangeable-magazine design to a gas-free 18V platform.

Ten per cent lighter than the previous generation

At 3.3 kg without a battery, the Speed Series body is 0.4 kg lighter than the previous NR1890DCA generation. With one BSL36A18X MultiVolt battery fitted, the working weight is 4.04 kg.

HiKOKI has achieved the reduction through a more compact chamber layout and magnesium-alloy components in the chamber, nose and magazine. This matters on real first-fix jobs, where the tool is carried, positioned and fired hundreds of times across a shift.

Air Spring Drive System+ explained

Like HiKOKI's established cordless nailers, the NR1890DCB stores high-pressure air in a sealed chamber to drive each nail. A high-speed motor resets the driver after the shot. There are no gas cartridges, fumes, air hoses or compressor to manage.

The new “Plus” mechanism changes the internal release system. A movable pin and pusher provide direct release, while a smaller pinwheel reduces the torque required to reset the driver. The result is a quicker, more efficient firing cycle.

With a MultiVolt battery, the tool fires at up to 4 nails per second. A compatible T-Power battery raises that figure to as much as 4.5 nails per second. The distinction is important: the NR1890DCBJPZ kit is supplied with two BSL36A18X MultiVolt batteries, while T-Power batteries are sold separately.

Made for serious first-fix work

The standard magazine accepts 30°–34° paper-collated nails from 50–90 mm long, with shank diameters from 2.8–3.3 mm. Capacity is 54–57 nails, and HiKOKI quotes approximately 700 nails from an 18V 5.0Ah battery.

An aggressive nose helps the tool hold its position on angled shots, while tool-free depth adjustment makes it easier to set a consistent finish. An electrical dry-fire lockout protects the workpiece and tool when the magazine is nearly empty, and the LED flashes to warn the user.

One nailer, three magazine formats

The most interesting part of the new platform may be its interchangeable magazine system. Removing three screws lets the same nailer body be configured for three distinct jobs using optional magazine-and-push-lever sets:

  • 384014 extended framing magazine: increases capacity to as many as 107 nails, reducing reload stops.
  • 384023 duplex magazine: accepts 57–89 mm duplex nails for temporary timber structures and formwork.
  • 384021 metal-connector magazine: uses 38–64 mm connector nails and adds a precise Strap-Tite probe.

All three optional magazines use lightweight magnesium-alloy construction. They are accessories rather than items included with the standard NR1890DCBJPZ kit.

Small changes that help all day

Speed and headline weight are only part of the redesign. HiKOKI has moved the control panel to a more visible position, enlarged the depth-adjustment wheel, lengthened the handle and widened the nail-feeder grip. None of these changes is dramatic in isolation, but together they make the nailer quicker to set up and easier to handle.
