SDS-Plus or SDS-Max? Choose the Right Hammer for the Job

SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are not simply two names for the same hammer drill. They use different accessory fittings and are intended for different scales of drilling and breaking. Choosing the right format first will make model comparisons much easier.

What SDS-Plus is for

SDS-Plus is the common choice for everyday drilling into concrete, masonry and blockwork. The machines are generally more compact than SDS-Max models and suit tasks such as fixing holes, anchor work, chasing and lighter chiselling—subject to the specification and modes of the individual tool.

For electricians, plumbers, installers and general construction work, an SDS-Plus hammer is often the machine that covers the widest range of regular holes without becoming unnecessarily heavy.

What SDS-Max is for

SDS-Max is aimed at larger drilling and heavier breaking work. The larger accessory system and more substantial machines make sense when the task moves beyond routine fixing holes into bigger diameters, longer drilling or sustained chiselling and demolition.

Bigger is not automatically better. An SDS-Max machine can be tiring and awkward for repeated small holes, while an undersized SDS-Plus tool can be slow and overworked on a demanding application. Match the tool to the bulk of the work.

Check the operating modes

Not every rotary hammer offers the same modes. Depending on the model, you may see:

  • Rotary drilling: rotation without hammer action, where supported.
  • Hammer drilling: rotation and impact for drilling masonry or concrete.
  • Hammer only: impact without rotation for compatible chisels and breaking work.

If you need chiselling, do not assume it is included. Check the mode selector and product specification. Also confirm whether the tool allows the chisel position to be adjusted before use.

Cordless or mains?

A cordless SDS machine is convenient for mobile work, quick jobs and sites where cable management is difficult. A mains machine can still be a sensible choice for sustained work in one area. Compare the complete cost: cordless performance depends on having suitable batteries, enough capacity and a charger that supports the working pattern.

Five specifications worth comparing

  1. Recommended drilling range: choose around the holes you make regularly, not the one exceptional job.
  2. Impact energy and rate: useful indicators, but consider them alongside weight and application guidance.
  3. Tool weight: include the battery where relevant, especially for overhead or repetitive work.
  4. Vibration information: important when planning exposure and selecting suitable controls.
  5. Dust-extraction options: check whether a compatible on-tool or external extraction solution is available.

Do not forget the accessory

An SDS-Plus bit does not fit an SDS-Max holder, and vice versa. Use accessories approved for the machine, material, diameter and speed. Inspect bits and chisels for wear or damage and follow the tool and accessory manufacturer's instructions.

The quick choice

Choose SDS-Plus for regular fixing holes, general masonry drilling and lighter chiselling where the selected model is rated for the task. Move to SDS-Max for larger holes and more demanding breaking work. If your work sits between the two, compare the recommended drilling range and weight of the actual machines rather than choosing on format alone.
